Glossary of Terms

Postby thecompoundmind » Sun Apr 13, 2008 9:28 am

Since many of the ideas presented in this site are new to the reader without extensive training I have attempted to provide definitions to help make sense of the ideas involved. Since many of these terms are used repeatedly in this work there would be no point in defining them in each article.

If you have an idea or concept you would like to have explained or expanded, please post it to this thread and I will be sure to give you my best understanding of it.

Please also understand that some of these terms are being used in a different connotation than their original use.

Terms of Sensation

Postby thecompoundmind » Sun Apr 13, 2008 9:38 am

Terms of sensation are words that represent various sensory inputs available to us. These include vision, hearing, taste, smell, touch & emotion. Touch and emotion may be commonly referred to as kinesthetic.

In our word choices there are also words that indicate the sensory mode we are using; I can see that, I hear you, that feels right, I understand, all say the same thing with a different input system as primary.

Note that I understand is rather neutral sounding and still lands in the kinesthetic area.

We also have the less used terms from smell and taste; That stinks and that left a bad taste in my mouth.

Model - a way of representing part of something so that it can be studied or understood. Models of the human body may show things such as nervous and skeletal systems so that these things are understood without the complication of having all parts present. In modeling a process we focus on the interactions without having to be distracted with other portions. This enables us to understand systems, strategies, etc. without having to look at all of them simultaneously.

Refraction Time - the period of time from when a nerve fires until it is ready to fire again. During the period when the nerve is becoming ready to fire again we do not have incoming information from that nerve.
